What determines Open or Closed Campus at LBCC?

The first day of winter term for 2017 was a chaotic time for many. Oregon State University, Western Oregon University, University of Oregon, and many other schools across the state closed on the first day of classes. However, Linn-Benton Community College remained open despite snow and ice on the roads. But why?
Dale Stowell, director of Institutional Advancement at LBCC cleared this up for us. "The safety of our students is priority," says Stowell, stating that if the roads are not too icy and the walkways can be cleared on campus, classes will proceed as normal. Early on the morning of a potential closed campus day, the College President,Vice President, and the security officers make a final decision. Students can receive the information through text messages, emails, the LBCC website, and radio stations across the Willamette Valley.
LBCC student Devin Bertrand said "the open campus stressed me out a little bit, but I'm glad I got the information before I slept through class." He's not alone in this; Stowell said many students can be confused about campus closure, especially if public schools and other colleges are closed. Thankfully, the news is distributed to students and staff in a number of ways, lessening the number of students missing class.
